Following the incoming tide, we will paddle across the river to Welch Island, the eastern-most island of the Lewis and Clark Wildlife refuge, and then paddle along Welch Island, past Red Slough, and up the side of Tenasillahe ("ten-a-SIL-a-hee" or "ten-a-SIL-ee") Island, part of the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife refuge and site of a "village of six houses" when Lewis and Clark traveled through the area in 1805. We will eat lunch on Lark Island, a man-made sandy island at the upstream end of Tenasillahee, where will have a panoramic view of Puget Island and the town of Cathlamet. After lunch and with the turning tide, we will paddle back downriver on the Oregon Side of Tenasillahe, through Clifton Channel, named for the historic fishing village of Clifton, where several old homes and net sheds remain.
